SIMBANG GABI TO SIMBANG TABI (Filipino’s traditions and behaviors in simbang gabi nowadays)

SIMBANG GABI TO SIMBANG TABI
(Filipino traditions and behaviors in simbang gabi nowadays)

Pasig City, Philippines – Today is the first day of simbang gabi. For us Filipino Catholics, simbang gabi is a traditional devotion of a nine-day novena mass held from December 16 to December 24 in anticipation to Christmas and to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is very sacred to us and it is the time where most of Filipino families and couples are present. But as the year’s passed by, this tradition changed into many perspectives.

Since I was a child I am always excited to attend the holy mass at simbang gabi, not only to feel the Christmas spirit but to cherish every moment that my family is complete. In Mary the Queen Parish at Greenhills San Juan, the simbang gabi is very solemn and peaceful. And there’s a free breakfast to all who attended the mass. It is a tradition of that parish tho’ I still a little kid. But as I grew up, different question formed into my mind as to why other people who also attending the mass act differently to my family. I noticed that simbang gabi seems fashion show to others. There’s a weird outfit that group of people wears. I began to question these people, why they wear that kind of freaking ghetto style outfit? Is there any costumes competition happening in the parish? But I also began to think that they are just doing it because they are confident and they are just showcasing the beauty of holy mass as to the solemnity of it. Of course we have to dress properly in the celebration of the holy mass, but the limit here is of course wear properly and humanly. But any of the possible answer, the celebration of holy mass is scared so, wear properly and objectively to the celebration that we will go or attend.

I also noticed that not only families are attending the mass, there is also a chessy like there’s no other day-get a room-not so fancy couple that is scattered in the dimmest and darkest side of the church. I began to ask my parents again as to why they have to positioned there selves in the weirdest side of the church. But I do understand now that it was their way to get or consume their quality time with their partner. It was like they were love birds that proving the phrase “birds of the same feather, flocks together”. They did what they wanted to do to each other. In layman’s term; “harutan doon, harutan dito, harutan everywhere”. It seems that they really didn’t care of the things that they’re actually doing. I must say for every act we made, there’s always a limitation. So act properly and decently, you guys weren’t the owner of the church, respect others and act appropriately. As you respect others, you also respect Jesus Christ, the true meaning of attending simbang gabi.

Note: For those who will say that I also did this stuff, you are wrong. I am not that crazy to showcase my fashion statement in church. My mom will be the first to remind me of that (ha ha). And I don’t have an intimate relationship now, so I guess I cannot do the “harutan time” on my own. (ha ha again). Even when i have, I always be with my family when attending simbang gabi.

So, Merry Christmas in advance everyone! Enjoy the simbang gabi!

At marami pang iba.
